Catalina Juniors
Another great Juniors Event at Club Catalina – this time it was the Jack Newton Junior Golf.
Club Catalina in Batemans Bay once again hosted the South Coast Junior Masters on Saturday and Sunday, August 25 and 26. There were 123 junior golfers competing in this prestigious tournament played over two days.
Play started in perfect conditions and everything was travelling well until the sky turned dirty. It wasn't long before the thunderstorm brought the day’s play to an abrupt halt.
After about 25 or 30 minutes it was decided to continue with play and brave the light rain but there was only a further 30 minutes play before the lightning returned and play was once again stopped – this time for the day.
Sunday’s round had to be delayed until the first round was completed and the draw made for the second round Shotgun start which finally got underway about an hour late at 8.15am.
The Junior Committee ran a Bacon and Egg roll barbecue breakfast headed by Chief Chef Bart Gannon and Geoff Thornthwaite. This was a huge hit with players and spectators selling out a lot earlier than expected and making more than $300 for the Junior Development Fund.
Jack Newton official, Heath Canning, was thrilled with the way things went over the two days, thanking the Catalina Members for the use of their course. He also gave praise to Dennis Grounds (Club Catalina groundsman) and his crew for the excellent condition of the course.
Heath was full of praise of the volunteers, Pro Shop and all of the club staff.
James Dickinson and newly-promoted juniors Sophie and Bill Eppelstun played well both days. Club Catalina couldn't have asked for three better young golfers to represent them. This was topped off by Sophie winning the Girls 11 Years and Under Nett with a first round 66 scratch and second round 75, with a total of 141. Sophie also won the first round with her great 66 Nett.
The major winners were Harry Cleare (Nelsons Bay) Overall Boys and Charlotte Perkins (Cronulla) taking out the Girls.
Key volunteers were: Judi Rimmer , Martin Rimmer, Graeme Skelton, Phil Spence, Rob Devonald,
Sunday Barbecue volunteers were: Bart Gannon and Geoff Thornthwaite
Saturday and Sunday Volunteers were: Peter Keatley, Kay Wallace, Don Wallace
Rules Official was Bruce Dickinson
