The Super 7s Series is a spring program designed to get women more involved in rugby union. There are competitions for under 14s, under 16s, under 18s, and youth girls.

The Boars are hoping to enter a team in all four divisions, and are calling all women and girls that are interested in playing to show up at Hanging Rock Oval to register for the competition.

Batemans Bay will also host the second round of the series on Saturday, October 20. The other two rounds of the competition will be held in Canberra and Yass, before the finals in Wagga Wagga on Saturday, November 10.

Boars president Matt Ryan said the club found out about a month ago.

“We started some discussions with the Brumbies earlier in the year, and when the time came to lock in venues, we were lucky enough to be one of them,” he said. “It’s a good spread of venues that allows teams to participate in at least one event.”

The Boars have traditionally entered at least one team in the series, but Ryan believes there’s enough interest for four teams this year.

“We always have at least one team in the program, but this year we’re looking to go one step further and nominate a team in each grade,” he said.

“The response has been great so far. We’ve fielded a lot of inquiries, and there’s a genuine excitement around the club.

“I remember back in the early 2000s we had a women’s team, and then it fell away a bit. We’ve always tried to promote it, but being able to throw a lot of resources and getting exposure will hopefully get it off the ground on a more permanent basis.”

Ryan’s end-goal is to have a competition where women play week-in and week-out at the same time as the men.

“There’s so much talent around, but they just don’t get the resources to allow them to really grow and develop over a number of years,” he said. 

“If we can get all that talent together in a semi-professional environment where they’re enjoying themselves, we’re half way there.”
