The retired Chief of Army has even fonder memories of the “Sallyman”.
He recalls being “always filthy, hot or cold, wet or dusty and always, always hungry”.
The Sallyman was always there with a cup of tea and, importantly for the young soldier, a packet of chewing gum.
These days, it is men and woman who drive the Sallyman truck to where they are needed – as our picture shows – complete with chewing gum.
