Festival goers can sign up for hands-on workshops, and learn to craft their own silver jewellery, learn how to hand-weave or crochet beanies, and explore photography or modern art.
There are also opportunities to play with floral art and extend your creative voice.
Children and the young at heart might prefer to play with lego and ‘’no time’’ clock making.
Marg Hansen will be running the “threads together” workshop. Marg is a crochet artist and beanie enthusiast based in Narooma.
She regularly journeys to the Alice Springs Beanie Festival and in 2005 she, together with Narooma Djaadjawan Dancers, won the Reconciliation Prize with a beanie made from local natural material and feathers.
“All the beanies on exhibition in the River of Art will travel to Alice Springs for the beanie festival,” she said.
“The festival has been going for 25 years. It started in a garage, and now over 7000 beanies from all around the world are sent in.”
Anyone is welcome at her workshops, but beware – you might get hooked.
“It’s a bit of an addiction,” Marg said.
“Once you learn, it can be therapeutic – it’s very rhythmic.
“Some of the ladies at the festival make three beanies a day, all year round.”
