The Dressage By The Sea festival runs at the Bawley Point equestrian centre until Sunday, February 25.
Friday saw riders compete at the highest standard – the Grand Prix test – at both national (CDN) and international (CDI) level.
Spectators of the CDI watched 18 horse and rider combinations perform advanced dressage movements – piaffe, passage, and canter pirouettes.
Hellyer scored an average of 69.76% from the five judges; 2.96% higher than second placed Gitte Donvig who rode Sancette to 66.80%.
A further 11 combinations contested Grand Prix CDN: The national level test allowed riders to become familiar with the advanced movements but without the additional rules and regulations required at international standard.
The national competition saw Alycia Targa ride CP Dresden into the win, scoring 67.46%. In second and third place were Gary Lung riding GB Winchester (65.76%), and Rochelle King Andrews riding Challenger Jacaranda (65.22%).
