Royal Canberra hosted a new team Stableford event where Junior Teams were invited to compete in a Slam Knockout Tournament on Monday, January 8.
Each team consisted of six junior golfers, that had to include at least one female. Catalina was represented by our five playing Juniors, James & Emily Dickinson, Ian Tompsett, Ryan Hall & Sean Griffin along with Kasha Solomon from Yowani Golf club who completed a combined Catalina/Yowani team.
All juniors played nine holes Stableford in the first round, with the top four in each team progressing to the next round.
Our team got off to a terrific start with James and Emily scoring 22 points each for the first nine holes, Sean (18 points) and Ryan (17 Points) were our top four with Ian Tompsett (15 Points) and Kasha from Yowani (11 Points) contributing well.
The second round was six holes where Ryan scored 16 points, Sean (14), Emily (10) and James (9), seeing Ryan and Sean through to the final round for three more holes. Sean added 6 more points and Ryan 5 points to see them both finish with a terrific 38 points for their 18 holes.
The atmosphere on the day was fantastic with the kids that dropped out walking around to caddy and support their teams.
The day concluded with a 100m “Shootout”, where each Junior had one shot for nearest the pin and the ‘winner take all’ prize.
Our team ended up with a total of 165 points to take second place outright, only three points behind a combined Belconnen/Murrumbidgee team. A great effort from the only non-Canberra team in the competition. Emily won the best Girl, 9-hole prize with her 22 points.
Our Juniors represented Club Catalina extremely well, not only did they play good golf, but they dressed smartly and acted in a way that would make our members proud.
A special thank you to Catalina member, Terry Mcallister and the Gunna Doo Bakery in Bungendore for their donation of a pie and a drink for those Juniors that went up early on Sunday.
