The Netherlands-based Australian won the prestigious Reem Acra Best Athlete Award, the Oscar of the equestrian world, at a gala dinner in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Bega-born Exell is the first carriage driver to win this event in the seven-year history of this FEI selection.
He was nominated last year and has since won his sixth World Cup.
The title “best athlete” is for athletes who have demonstrated exceptional athletic skills and have taken the sport to a new level over the last 12 months.
“I am thrilled to be here,” Exell said on the night.
“For driving to be recognised against Olympic disciplines is a tall order.
“This is not really about me, it is about carriage driving and for Australia.
“I just concentrate on what I do with the horses.”
He said the future of carriage driving was looking bright.
