But since that crash, on April 9 last year, Michael John Severino has said he cannot remember if he was behind the wheel.
A paramedic’s report later described his state as “amnesiac” because he could not name the day, month, or year and he seemed unable to explain who Ms Fryer was.
Mr Severino has pleaded not guilty to aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death.
The then 24-year-old and Ms Fryer, a 19-year-old student from Malua Bay, had been drinking in Manly the night before and on the morning of the crash.
The first ambulance arrived at 4.23am, just eight minutes after Mr Severino’s Toyota veered off Mona Vale Road and flipped twice.
Ms Fryer was thrown onto the road, suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene.
Paramedic Brian Joyce told Downing Centre District Court on July 30 that he questioned Mr Severino shortly after he arrived at the scene.
“I asked him if he was involved in the accident and his response was, ‘I was the driver’,” he said.
But Mr Joyce also testified that Mr Severino had appeared confused during the examination, could not answer basic questions and only recalled drinking with Ms Fryer earlier in the night. Continued page 2
