AS a newcomer from Sydney to Batemans Bay, I would like to express my concern at the lack of venues for music and entertainment.

From my experience living and teaching English in small country towns, such as Jindabyne, Moree and Wagga Wagga, I observed the heart and soul of a town is reflected in the performing arts.
It is the vehicle through which people of all ages, including school students, can express themselves and families can gather, to celebrate and enjoy leisure time.
Having attended the Batemans Bay Writers Festival for the past two years, I have discovered, to my delight, there is a huge interest in the arts, demonstrated by the number of talented artists, singers, authors, painters, actors and the like, who have made the South Coast their home.
What is sadly lacking is a suitable venue.
A convention or cultural centre would attract more visitors.
As we know, increased visitor numbers equate to a boost in tourism and spending.
Furthermore, as a member of the Batemans Bay Chamber of Commerce, I refer to an article in your paper of July 10, 2015, by Chamber president, Allan Rutherford, who stated the former bowling club site would lend itself to a “multitude of uses”.
Mr Rutherford is in favour of seeing the site remain a community asset.
This reflects the view of many people I have met in the ten months that I have lived here.
There is much potential for the site to assist our youngsters as well. From a business point of view, the bowling club redevelopment would improve visitor numbers, ultimately bringing more business and job prospects.
There can be no doubt it would be exciting for this wonderful town to see the site transformed into a ‘shining emerald’.
Unfortunately, while the site sits in its unloved state, it makes a poor impression on newcomers and visitors.
It does little to give a warm and welcoming appearance.
The benefits will be long lasting for our children and future generations.
The potential to change this situation for the better is there.
We just need to take action.
