The club is organising the community fundraising event in conjunction with the Broulee and Mossy Point Community Association.
Last weekend, a group of foolhardy members tested the freezing waters, taking on a 1200 metre course from Shark Bay, around Broulee Island, out to the ocean then back to the surf club.
Club president Geoff Wells said the club was excited about putting on the event, and hoped it would become a permanent fixture in the local community.
Mr Wells took part in Sunday’s swim, and said the conditions were challenging.
“There was a large swell coming into the Bay and breaking on the reef, forcing swimmers a little wider than anticipated, and of course it was a little cold,” he said.
“But the course is a perfect choice, with normally only a gentle swell encountered as you swim out through Shark Bay and around the rock reef off Broulee headland, and then a good body surf home to the beach.
Mr Wells said the club was hoping to attract a range of competitors from the region and even further afield.
“With plenty to see on the way, and the ocean off the point usually teeming with fish, large and small, I hope a lot of people will get behind this event.”
The event has the support of the Eurobodalla Shire Council and local businesses including Total Ecco Adventures.
Mr Wells said club members are preparing for the upcoming lifesaving season and the ‘Broulee Bay to Breakers Swim’ which will be held on Sunday March 11 2012.
“We’ve grown accustomed to the cold temperatures, meeting every Sunday at North Broulee toilet block for a social swim across the bay.
“Any other brave fools wanting to join in would be welcome. We meet at the toilet block at 9.30am every Sunday.”
