God bless you Shane Warne, the patron saint of blokes punching above their weight.

I refer, of course, to the news that the legendary Australian cricketer has allegedly hooked up with English actress Liz Hurley. At least one Australian will be getting on top of a Pom this summer.
There has been some talk that the Liz Hurley affair is a cunning ploy from the English designed to stop Warnie making a comeback during the Ashes series. I disagree, I think it is simply Warnie at his exceptional best, showing that he is still capable of taking big scalps and dominating the English on and off the field.
Michael who?
Speaking of Australian spin bowlers, I’m sure I’m not the only one who asked ‘Michael who?’ when West Australian Michael Beer was named in the Australian squad for the third Ashes test. To be honest, I’m not even sure if Michael Beer knows who Michael Beer is.
The 26-year-old has only played five first class matches, picking up 16 wickets at an uninspiring average of 39.93. Those are hardly the sort of numbers that will strike fear into the hearts of the English batsmen.
The Australian selectors have been through nine different spin bowling options since Shane Warne retired. Because of this, I suggest that any readers interested in playing cricket for Australia head down to their local nets and practice their spin-bowling. At this rate, it could make you the next in line for a baggy green cap.
Mundine knocked out
I’m sure there were plenty of people who took a lot of pleasure in seeing Anthony Mundine knocked out by Garth Wood in the fifth round of their fight at Acer Arena last Thursday night.
What surprised me was Mundine’s humility and graciousness in defeat. He didn’t try and make out as though Wood had landed a lucky punch, but rather he admitted that Wood had been the better fighter on the night and wished the up-and-comer luck in the future. It will be interesting to see what is around the corner for both of them. One gets the feeling that Mundine’s career could be coming to an end, while there is sure to be plenty of big things on the horizon for Wood.
