Thirty-three members visited the neat and interesting garden of Tonnie and Jan Van Den Broek on a beautiful sunny morning on August 19. Jan & Tonnie have developed a lovely garden, which includes raised vegetable patches in their very sunny backyard. Jan is also experimenting with seed blocks to facilitate growing seedlings. After a thorough inspection of the garden all members then enjoyed a sumptuous morning tea on the rear patio and courtyard.

The monthly meeting on August 25 was again well attended with more than 50 members enjoying an interesting demonstration of Bonsai by fellow member, Maureen Daniels. Maureen explained how she selected and matched plants and pots to achieve a visually pleasing effect.
Maureen demonstrated how to tease the root system to allow selection of stronger roots (which may become part of the display) to ensure the plant survives. Once this is done the plant is placed in the pot and positioned to give the best effect. The roots are then backfilled with Bonsai potting mix, which is eased into the root system to ensure good contact and to support the plant.
The plant is then wired to the desired shape, with special care required not to break the delicate limbs. With the plant set to shape, rocks or moss are often added as a mulch/decorative finish. Maureen likes to soak finished work in a mild solution of sesol to reduce shock and release air bubbles in the potting mix.
The club is looking forward to a whale watching outing in October, with garden visits to Bermagui on September 30 and local visits/morning teas at members’ gardens in October and November.
The table displays were excellent this month with three sensational floral displays from the floral art group, receiving acclamation from members and a very pleased tutor.
