I came across Tomaga River Bridge and noticed a car, 30 metres ahead, with its hazard lights on, facing north, and a lady standing on the opposite side of the road. 

I turned around to offer assistance. To my horror, the woman told me that she had witnessed someone hit a dog and not stop.  We were both distressed that someone could be so cold and callous. 

The dog was unable to move and stuck down the embankment. It was quite dark by now. I sat down and tried to keep him calm. A man who had witnessed the hit-and-run also turned up to offer assistance.

The woman, eventually, did manage to get through to someone at Moruya Veterinary Hospital surgery.

Purely by chance, a guy saw the hazard lights of the three cars and asked if it was a black dog. The dog’s ears pricked up at the sound of his voice. He could not move. It just happened to be his owner, a guy I work with.

The dog’s name is Mal, a chow cross border collie, who is nine months old. He has a broken leg, grazes to his head and legs and requires surgery to put a plate and pins in his leg. The owners would like to thank those who stopped and the vets.

If the person who hit Mal is reading this and feels any remorse and would like to renumerate the owners for costs, please contact the vet on 4474 2532. 

In answer to Renee Baker of Catalina (Bay Post June 3, 2016), “The proposal for a centre to help our disabled children and teenagers is an absolute godsend … should already be available in our local area”. 

I totally agree. I am not disputing the benefits of or the need for this facility, but I do dispute that the community should accept losing another local park (in Melaleuca Crescent) when there is no apparent need. There are other sites available. 

One of these is Mundarra Way. There is a large open council-owned space there with many advantages. It would cost less to build and maintain there, it would be easier to create and facilitate links with other synergistic services adjacent; it would not cause traffic and safety problems, would give easy access to users and would have a reduced risk of flooding and be adjacent to space for expansion and free-play.

I have no interest regarding the current disagreement over the use of the (Melaleuca Crescent) land, but I noticed, over our very wet weekend, that the land to be given to a disabled children's centre was more than half inundated.

Joe's Creek, its natural drainage area, was full and overflowing. 

Maybe some land at a higher level would be more suitable? 

Although, given we have been warned of the likelihood of more of this sort of weather in future, the name "Muddy Puddles" would  be appropriate at times.
