All the coaching staff and committee are doing their best to keep spirits up
- John McAlister BATEMANS BAY TIGERS CLUB PRESIDENT
Playing at home, the side aims to bounce back from a 48-point loss to Narooma last week, which followed a 100-point drubbing by cross-town rivals, Moruya, in round 6.
Despite the size of their losing margins this year, club president John McAlister said the side could turn its recent form around.
“All the coaching staff and committee are doing their best to keep spirits up within the club, and I can’t fault the effort of the players,” he said.
“We are in a rebuilding phase.
“Obviously, it is hard for the boys to be on the wrong end of some of those scorelines, but they are turning up every week and having a crack, which is all we can ask for.
“We welcome a couple of players back this week, so we should be competitive.”
It was always going to be difficult for the Tigers against the third-placed Narooma, but the side showed plenty of fight in the opening twenty minutes, taking the game to their opponents.
Unfortunately, they were unable to keep a lid on Group 16’s leading try scorer, Rodrigues Caesar, who finished with three tries.
McAlister said the final scoreline was not a fair reflection of the way the game panned out.
“I think there were still a lot of positives for the team to take out of the game,” he said.
“We were very competitive for the first part of the game and I think that if a couple of things had gone our way, it might have been a totally different outcome.
“It was definitely an improved performance from when we played them back in round one.”
Last week was also tough for the Tigers’ league tag team and reserve grade, which were both kept scoreless.
It doesn’t get any easier for the girls on Sunday, as they face off against the second-placed Bombala High Heelers.
McAlister said it is only a matter of time before they realised their potential.
“I count the league tag team as one of the club’s great successes,” he said.
“They have had a couple of wins which has been great for the club, and they are just enjoying each game. They have been fantastic in their participation.”
Batemans Bay will take on Bombala at Mackay Park on Sunday, starting with the league tag at 12pm.
