Held at Taree in May, the tournament incorporated 90 of the state’s leading amateurs, aged from 30 to 42.
Rounds of 71, 71 and 69 were enough to secure Gavin a score of +1 for the competition, three strokes behind winner, Logan Toms, from Moore Park Golf Club.
The second placed finish marks his best result at the event, having finished fifth in last year’s Championships at Mollymook.
Fitzgerald said he managed to exceed his own expectations, despite holding high hopes for the three days.
His latest result is another indicator of the impressive form he has shown throughout the year so far.
Not only was he crowned Moruya Club Champion for the tenth time, but he also took out the Far South Coast Championship at Bermagui.
He is now expected to represent NSW as part of the Mid-Amateur team.
