Well, there is at least one, and he is going to run against him for the LNP in the federal election.

Jonathan Pavetto comes from a fifth generation sugar farming family near Ingham and went to primary and high school in the area before studying at the Australian National University in Canberra.

He has worked for the agriculture lobby group Canegrowers and as an economist for the Alliance of Electricity Consumers.

He is also openly gay.

The 25-year-old said Mr Katter's outspoken views on LGBTIQ issues were just one of the reasons he was running for the seat.

"Bob Katter has a lot of views that I am very uncomfortable with," he said.

"A lot of Bob's views on social issues, even economic issues, are seriously out of date and out of step with the electorate."

Mr Katter has held the seat of Kennedy since 1993, nearly as long as Mr Pavetto has been alive, and he firmly believes it is time for a change.

"The consensus in the electorate is that Bob's time is up," Mr Pavetto said.

"The result from the last election had a 16.5 per cent swing against him and his margin is now two per cent, so that is a pretty clear indication that Bob isn't representing the views of the electorate."

Mr Pavetto stood for LNP pre-selection for the seat in 2013, beaten by Noeline Ikin who had to withdraw from the 2016 election after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

And now, having been endorsed by his party, Mr Pavetto is ready to take the battle directly to heart of Katter country.

Mr Pavetto doesn't believe his sexuality is an issue, describing the communities in Kennedy as enormously inclusive and accepting, putting Mr Katter's views very much out of step with Mr Pavetto's perception.

"The world is a very different place than when Bob Katter was first elected," he said.

"A friend or family member being gay isn't a big surprise to anyone anymore; north Queensland is a very accepting place."

He also acknowledges his sexuality is fairly irrelevant to the community he hopes to represent.

"On the list of issues that people are concerned about, someone's sexuality, whether they want to be in politics or not, isn't at the top," he said.

Much like Mr Katter, the LNP hasn't got the best track record on LGBTIQ issues but Mr Pavetto said that is changing.

"I'm not the first gay person in the LNP, there's a lot of other gay people inside the party," he said.

"There's a lot of people progressing these issues.

"The Labor party don't have a good track record either; there were a lot of the issues in the gay community they failed to address."

Mr Pavetto said the overwhelming response from people in the Kennedy electorate he was meeting was positive.

"They are excited that there is a young person standing for politics," he said.

"Someone with a fresh direction, new ideas, a future plan for the electorate and people are excited about that."

He said having grown up in the area he understood the issues that face people in rural and regional areas.

"I was brought up on the family sugar cane farm," he said.

"I saw firsthand the impact often well intentioned decisions have on farms, family farms and the communities around them.

"A lot of the decisions were made by Labor governments that didn't further the interests of family farming but also did an incredible amount of damage to regional communities that rely on farming.

"As someone who is very passionate about north Queensland these are issues that are very important to me."

Rodney Croome from Australian Marriage Equality, an organisation that has been outspoken about Mr Katter's views on same-sex marriage, welcomed Mr Pavetto's endorsement.

"The fact the LNP has selected Jonathan Pavetto as its candidate in Kennedy is a welcome sign of how rapidly old prejudices are evaporating," he said.

"Gay Australians make an important contributions to every family and community and Mr Pavetto's proud contribution is a reminder of this."

Mr Katter declined to comment but a representative did confirm he had not commenced his backwards walk from Bourke.
