Moruya Surf Life Saving Club Special Nippers and the Moruya South Head Cycle and Pathway committee are pleased with councillors Danielle Brice and Gabi Harding’s decision to donate their pay rise.
Surf Club president Mike Hallahan said the money would go towards buying buoyancy life vests for special nippers participants.
“It is fantastic and is a real measure of the quality of some of the councillors, who are putting their money where their mouth is,” he said.
“The vests are about $100 each.
“It is a huge help to the group.
“Each year we have a wish list and this allows us to mark a couple of things off.”
Moruya South Head Cycle and Pathway committee member Heinz Matti said it was fantastic news.
“Council overall has supported us over many years,” he said.
“Riding or walking on the shoulder is just not an option.
“It is too dangerous and a path needs to be built.”
John Seltenrych said a path from Moruya to South Head would encourage more people to walk or ride to and from town or the beach.
“I know families who would let their kids ride bikes to school, instead of catching the school bus, if there was a path,” he said.
Cr Harding said it was an easy way for her to support the community.
“There are so many community groups around that could do with some help,” she said.
“We have chosen two that are dear to our heart.
“It is a small contribution that goes a long way.”
Cr Harding has been involved in Special Nippers.
“It is so fantastic to see what a group of surf life savers can do for another group of people,” she said.
“They need the extra funds to buy equipment.”
Cr Brice said both groups were very dear to her heart.
“The cycle way and footpath project has been ongoing for more than 15 years,” she said
“I became involved after I lost my dear son, Chris.”
Chris Brice died after being hit by a car on South Head Road in 2008.
“I would like to see the footpath completed from South Head to town,” Cr Brice said.
All councillors were contacted for comment, however only Crs Neil Burnside, Peter Schwarz and Liz Innes responded.
The three councillors said they regularly donated to charities and community groups. Last year, all councillors gave their pay rise to the 2015 NSW Youth Conference, held in the Eurobodalla.
