Welsh was approached with an idea for a team from community members and was supported by the Marymead child, family and community organisation.
Local Indigenous elders allowed the team to use the name Buru which is the name for kangaroo in this area.
The team chose the shirt design which represented the kangaroo, Indigenous art and their sponsor.
Welsh said it was great to see the team form in training and playing and it was also good to see them bringing their families and children to watch.
She’s enjoyed playing with family members in the social competition run by volunteers which encourages a family atmosphere.
“I had the opportunity this year to play touch footy with my three sons and had a great time,” Welsh said.
“I believe in promoting healthy active lifestyles and to have fun within your community.
“It is great to see so much talent in people who are motivated and committed.
“It’s also great to see the respect everyone has for each other.
“Sometimes I think they are playing for Australia; that’s how passionate they are about their sports.”
The first round of finals begins tonight.
Blitzen Burus play Hammerheads and Sports Power plays Good Thanks at 5.30pm, while Noeyedeer faces The Dark Knights and Durras Datsuns play Mudcrabs at 6.30pm.
