There was a good roll-up of players and some even games.
“Koby and Takhi both scored goals in their match up,” committee member Cheryl Sutherland said.
“Jaxon tackled well but couldn’t stop Tom from scoring, while Olivia and Reagan both showed good skills in tackling and dribbling.”
There were no award winners but gummy bears were shared among the group at the end.
Numbers were down in the junior grade but those keen players who did attend coped well with the hot conditions.
“Antonette showed good tackling skills and Jarrah and Emma made a good combination for their team,” Sutherland said
“Welcome back to Ella after her big overseas holiday.
“Tom was able to score goals and Jane and Felicity were very strong in attack.”
The senior players hit the field after the junior games and the even competition was emphasised again.
Ladder-leaders Knights locked into a fierce tussle with third-placed Wanderers in the first game.
It was a game of many missed opportunities for both teams and each team will need to address their finishing in the quest to win this year’s premiership.
Solid positional play from Wanderers’ Sharon Carruthers allowed her to dispossess Knights’ strikers and mount counter-attacks.
However, her team squandered chances in the first half, missing two easy goals.
The near misses for both teams continued in the second half.
With only minutes remaining, a pass from Lindy Hudson set up a Lisa Thomas shot on goal.
The first shot was blocked but Thomas flicked the rebound into goal for a 1-nil Knights victory.
Best and fairest points for Wanderers went to Carruthers, Therese Pott and Nicole Compton.
Goal-scorer Thomas was best for Knights followed by Louise Stephens and Bronwyn Taylor.
The second match was another close match between Sticks and Strikers.
The young brigade of Sticks acquitted themselves well against their more experienced rivals.
It was the impenetrable combination of Sticks’ Julie Bray and Dale Sponberg that stood out in the match.
Time and time again these two defenders broke down Strikers attacking play.
Donna Ryan led the way for Strikers and was always a goal-scoring threat, Gabi Harding set-up Strikers attack from the midfield and Kiara Schiefferley has developed into a strong tackler.
Unfortunately neither team could break the deadlock and at full-time it was nil-all.
“Ebony Bray is playing good hockey and relishes her role in Sticks defensive line up,” Sutherland said. “Emma Laussau put in a determined and skilled effort for someone so young.”
Tomorrow, the minkey and junior presentations start at 11am at the Moruya Ice Cream Parlour and raffle books are due.
Draw for tomorrow:
1.30pm: Strikers v CBK.
3pm: Knights v Sticks.
