Greens councilor Gabi Harding has called on Bega MP and NSW Infrastructure Minister Andrew Constance to “defend the Eurobodalla’s water supply”.
Cr Harding said a consultant’s report to the council confirmed the danger to the local water supply from changes proposed to the Dargues Gold Mine at Majors Creek.
“Given that the water catchment, in which the Dargues Gold Mine is located, supplies 85 per cent of Eurobodalla’s water supply, the threat posed by the use of cyanide is enormous,” Cr Harding said.
“Our local state MP, Andrew Constance, has been silent on this matter for too long.
“Submissions on the proposal close next week, and it is well past time that Mr Constance went on the record to defend his constituents’ basic right to a secure, safe water supply free from the threat of major contamination.”
Cr Harding urged all Eurobodalla residents to have their say by contacting Mr Constance and/or making submissions via the NSW Department of Planning’s website.
Submissions close Wednesday, August 26.
