Michael O’Brien and his sons Clayton and Mackenzie of Currowan Creek and Bawley Point’s Paul O’Brien, wife Rebecca and daughter Lily completed two legs each of the 5.5km swim, 25km kayak, 24km run and 62km mountain bike race.
It took the Obey Crew – their team name – nine hours 41 minutes and 48 seconds and the group finished almost 40 minutes before their nearest competitors, in a field of 13 entries.
Lily swam and rode, Michael did two paddles, Clayton and McKenzie rode and ran, Rebecca did two swims and Paul swam and rode.
Michael said the conditions deteriorated in the afternoon for paddlers and swimmers as a wind created “one to two foot chop” on Lake Jindabyne.
“The side chop was quite testing,” he said.
The running and mountain bike courses were steep and offered the group a good challenge.
It was the first time they had competed together as a family and Michael said they hoped to return next year.
“It’s the only one I know of in Australia that combines all disciples, rather than three like a triathlon,” he said.
“It was absolutely fantastic that we finished first and did it together.”
McKenzie, Rebecca and a friend will tackle Sunday’s Challenge Batemans Bay half-marathon distance.
