I write to reassure readers that Unity Mining’s track record in the operations of mines comparable to the Dargues gold mine project is world-class.
In fact, our facility at Henty in Tasmania was complimented by the now Leader of the Labor Opposition, then resources minister: “the work they do to ensure they comply environmentally is fantastic”.
This is a facility adjacent to the Southwest Conservation Area, one of the most pristine areas in the country.
Our record in more-urban settings is equally strong, and regulators have been highly complementary of our operations in the heart of residential Bendigo.
We are also fortunate to operate under a strict regulatory framework, which is closely monitored and policed.
Australia’s operating standards and environmental and community protections are among the best in the world.
Also among the world’s best, our tailings facility designer Knight Piésold has successfully designed facilities for more than 400 mining projects.
Jobs, education and opportunities will flow on to businesses, creating a welcome boost to growth and economic prosperity in the community.
Unity Mining aims to be a valued member of the community, generating significant economic returns.
The project will create about 100 jobs during construction and an additional 120 jobs during operation.
We appreciate there are concerns in the community and we are committed to continuing our strong dialogue through the Dargues Reef Community Consultative Committee.
And we appreciate debate, preferring that it be informed.
Our approach has always been one of consultation, of openness and transparency both with sharing our development plans, and in responding to questions and concerns with full and complete information.
We’re excited about this project and looking forward to become an enduring member of the community.
Andrew McIlwain, managing director, Unity Mining
