After storms hit the Eurobodalla on the day prior to the event there were fears that the carnival would be cancelled, but the clouds cleared for a sun-drenched day at Bermagui.
The carnival started late as clubs struggled to get all their Nippers to Bermagui beach with some roads closed due to flooding.
Broulee Surfers Surf Life Saving Club sports coordinator Scott Elliott was rapt by the number of Nippers who entered.
“Given the weather we had a pretty good turnout,” Elliott said.
“The Broulee team had a lot of fun and we saw some great performances across the age groups.”
The water at Bermagui started clear and blue, but as the day wore on it turned a nasty looking brown colour with all the sediment from the rivers.
“Later in the day some of the kids did not like the look of the water but that didn’t stop them plunging in to compete,” he said.
The under 14s competed with the long surf life saving competition boards for the first time and Tom Griffiths, Craig Senior and Josh Murphy all performed well in the water events.
A strong ironman performance was put on by the Broulee under 13s boys with Kellen Lenehan coming in first followed by Wade McDonald in third and Jack Dent in fourth.
Tilly Lee finished second in the under 12s diamond lady and Sam O’Keefe was second in the surf swim race.
For the first time the under 11s age group could race in the ironman and diamond lady.
Callum Elliott had a great day winning the ironman and also the under 11s surf swim.
Kirra Dale won the girls’ diamond lady and the girls’ surf swim, where she was second overall behind Callum.
Rhys Flood and Lucy Hincksman also excelled on the beach winning flags and beach sprint and then the pair combined to lead Broulee’s beach sprint relay team to victory.
In under 10s, Abbey Dunn excelled in the surf swim, board paddling and performed did well in the beach events.
Dunn combined with Keira Lenahan, Bradley Lund, and Indhi Filmer to win the under 10s beach sprint relay for Broulee.
Taren Elliott showed her skill when she was second overall in the under 9s surf swim against the boys.
The under 8s competed in their first carnival with Jessica Flood, Maya Bradshaw and Hayden Fairweather not afraid to jump in to all events enthusiastically.
Scott Elliot said the club was looking forward to the Country Championships at Mollymook in January and the next Far South Coast carnival at Pambula.
“Some of the Nippers will go and compete against some of the best in NSW at Mollymook and all of the Broulee team are looking forward to the next carnival in Pambula in February,” he said.
“The final carnival is at home at Broulee beach in March and that one will be huge for the club.”
