A couple of years ago this paper ran numerous articles about the disastrous state of the building industry and showed that the shire lagged behind the Bega and Shoalhaven shires in building development approvals.
There were letters to the editor telling of problems with the shire’s building department and evidence from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing building approvals had fallen like lemmings off a cliff.
Council, in response, said it was all due to the global financial crisis which the rest of Australia had managed to avoid. The councillors accepted this response 5 to 4.
Now NSW has been ranked as Australia’s strongest state economy on the back of a boom in the building industry, a boom that has tragically by-passed the Eurobodalla.
Even though it is closer to Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra, this shire still ranks behind Bega.
How bad does it have to get and how compelling does the evidence need to be before Eurobodalla’s councillors stop squabbling with each other, do the right thing by their constituents and support local business?
