The program, one of five of council’s Active Living programs, provides fun, friendship and social activities for people with disability.
Eighty past and present members of the group let their hair down and danced the night away to local band, The Nashberries at a birthday function at the St Mary’s Performing Arts Centre in Moruya on Saturday, August 23.
Council’s Active Living program is all about providing opportunities for people who are socially isolated to take part in our community.
It gives those who are frail aged and people with disability access to medical and other essential services, social and recreational activities, and opportunities to develop life and work skills.
Mayor Lindsay Brown said council had provided the Active Living community transport services for the past 29 years with the help of both federal and state government grants and 162 committed volunteers.
“The Active Living program has also helped people living with disability in the Peer Support program to socialise and be part of community events almost every weekend for the last 21 years,” Cr Brown said.
“In the last financial year we have helped connect 1500 people – that is four per cent of our population – to services that enhanced their lives.”
In the past 12 months council’s Active Living program delivered:
• More than 20,000 community transport trips to over 1200 passengers, with volunteers driving almost 400,000 kilometres during the year,
• Close to 15,000 hours of living and life skills training and support to 17 people who have disability support packages – that is more than 300 hours of support per week to some of the most disadvantaged people in our community, and
• About 20,000 hours of community access and activities to 74 people who are frail aged and 70 people with a mild to moderate disability.
“Council is incredibly grateful for the dedication of time given by our volunteers who help make our Active Living programs successful,” Cr Brown said.
“They are integral to the program’s success.”
