Residents can take along one of their favourite books in good condition and donate a gold coin, then swap their book for someone else's.
Mayor Lindsay Brown said all the money raised would be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which would use the money to buy books and other literary resources for children living in remote and isolated communities.
Only one in five children in a Northern Territory remote community can read at an accepted level and less than 36 per cent of people have access to a library and books.
“The Foundation’s aim is to improve literacy levels and in doing so, the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians,” Cr Brown said.
“By participating in the Great Book Swap, you can help them achieve this.”
The Great Book Swap at will be held at Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma libraries during Indigenous Literacy Day, Wednesday, September 3 at 10am.
