SCOUTS from Denmark and Japan are settling in to Batemans Bay whilst on exchange for up to six weeks.
Natsuko Kobayashi from Japan and Kirsten Langkilde from Denmark are staying with local scouts and attending school.
Scouts Braieta Barenaba from Batemans Bay High School and Lauren Hamer from Carroll College said they had enjoyed showing Kirsten and Natsuko around town during their stay.
Kirsten from Denmark, who has been here for five weeks and leaves next Thursday, said a highlight of her stay was learning to surf with friends she made at Carroll College.
“Surfing was better than seeing the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” she said.
“It was so amazing, I got up first go.
“I’ve learnt lots and met new friends.”
Kirsten said she came to Australia on exchange because her sister did it and “she enjoyed it so much”.
“Because she enjoyed it, I followed,” she said.
Natsuko has only been here a week but said she was already enjoying the area.
“I want to surf but the water is too cold for me,” she said.
She will be attending Batemans Bay High School for three weeks, before she returns to Japan.
Last year, Batemans Bay hosted another scout from Denmark but district leader Anne Jackson said a local scout was yet to go overseas on exchange.
“The benefits to our group is the awareness created by the visiting scouts of their scouting and family life,” she said.
“The visiting scouts are given an opportunity to visit various areas as well as live in Batemans Bay, attend local schools and interact with the host family.”
Applications are currently open for Australian youth members to go overseas during the Christmas holidays.
Venturer scouts aged 16 to 17 from Australia can exchange to Denmark, England or Japan.
