The battle between the first-placed Molonglo and second-placed Batemans Bay should decide the likely minor premier with two rounds remaining in the AFL Canberra second grade competition. 

Some of the seniors’ players have not played since their clash against Gungahlin on July 12 and coach Mark Adams admitted the club would be going in “a bit underdone physically” after a bye and a forfeit by ANU.

“If we’re mentally strong we’ll be right,” Adams said.

The Seahawks will be missing captain Sam Millynn, Harry Clout and Tom Purcell, who injured a quadricep muscle playing for the reserves against Goulburn.

“We’ll be a bit undermanned but we’ll be keen to get out of the blocks after weeks off,” Adams said.

“Tom did some damage to his quad with a fairly bad cork and he could be on the clock to play finals football.”

Adams said the key for the Seahawks was to approach the match like any other game.

“We won’t build up to much into the game,” Adams said.

“The older blokes relish weeks off and the kids are full of enthusiasm.

“The main thing is to get your hands on the ball early to settle yourself.”

Adams said he would likely captain/coach the team on Sunday but believed some of the younger players could show greater leadership.

“Younger blokes like BJ Marshall, who’s playing good footy, could step-up and lead from the front,” he said.

“A few of the inexperienced players using their voice and being constructive would be a really good sign for a coach going into the finals.”

Despite the high stakes of the game, Adams hopes the Bay get back to their structures after a lay-off.

“We’ll want to get back to our game plan and if the boys put in a good showing I’ll be happy,” he said.

Club president Col Wakelam was hopeful the seniors could defeat Molonglo.

“It would be a pretty big thing to see the team be minor premiers,” Wakelam said.

“I can’t be happier with Mark and players getting into the finals in the club’s second year in the Canberra competition.”

The Seahawks’ next home game is on August 16 against Eastlake.

It will also be ladies’ day and a champagne lunch will be provided.

The ladies’ day will proceed a ball celebrating the 10-year and 20-year premiership reunions.
