ABC TV’s science program Catalyst has come to the rescue, talking to the experts and divining the real facts.
There’s some lovely science on display, but some sobering warnings too.
The good news is that there is a lot that can still be done.
The not-so-good news is that we are leaving it all a bit late.
The interesting bit is that most of the world’s megacities are at risk, and that this might help focus attention onto the problem.
They look seriously into the last time (25,000 years ago) that temperatures were two degrees warmer than in the interim (and we’re already about halfway back up there now).
As an added bonus, the second half of the program looks at house fires. Supposing a small fire breaks out in your son’s bedroom (sigh, boys and matches.)
How long have you got until the fire reaches the flashover point after which the game is essentially up, and the house and probably its inhabitants are lost? Prepare to be surprised and perhaps more than a little shocked. . http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/catalyst/SC1302H001S00
Changed the batteries in those smoke detectors recently?
