RYDA co-ordinator Derek Anderson, of Moruya Rotary, said the professional presenters, including members of NSW Police, made the students a lot more aware that driving entailed more than just steering their car.
“This includes using their peripheral vision to be aware of what is happening around them, what effects alcohol and drugs have on a person’s driving ability, and what their responsibilities are in owning and caring for a car,” Mr Anderson said.
RYDA was supported by the three Rotary clubs in the Eurobodalla Shire - Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma.
The day-long program targets year 11 students, most of whom are either learner drivers or have just obtained their red P-plates.
“Most students were amazed at the braking distance demonstrations,” Mr Anderson said.
“It was a real eye opener when they saw firsthand how small increases in speed create large increases in the distance it takes to stop a car.”
They also heard from a local mother of how the death of her son, who was hit from behind by a car, affected not just the family, but also friends, emergency workers and many others in the community.
Mr Anderson praised Rotarians for their help over the two days and Moruya Rotarians for providing lunch for the students, presenters and volunteers.
