Eurobodalla Shire Council was called to clear a rock fall from the Kings Highway on Wednesday morning which closed the road for a short time.

A Roads and Maritime spokeswoman said there was no damage to the road; however the safety fence had been damaged and would need to be repaired.

“The safety fence which stops rocks from falling on the road has been damaged but the road in now open,” she said, on Wednesday afternoon.

Work to repair the fence will be carried out as part of stage two of Clyde Mountain stabilisation work between Poohs Corner and the top of the Clyde Mountain.

“A further assessment of the area will be carried out on Thursday and repairs will be included in the stabilisation work which is planned to start on Monday,” the spokeswoman said.

“The work is part of our commitment to reduce the risk of rock falls on this important road to ensure it remains a safe and reliable route which serves the community well into the future."

Work on stage two will involve the installation of more robust fencing, rock bolts and netting to provide a more permanent stability for the slope and is expected to significantly reduce the risk of future landslides onto the road.

The spokeswoman said work would mainly be carried out under single lane closures with motorists guided through the site by traffic control on weekdays between 7am and 6pm.

“Work will not take place on weekends or during times of increased traffic on Monday mornings and Friday afternoons,” she said.

Work will be suspended from Thursday, April 17 to Monday, April 28 to improve traffic flow during the school holidays.

Some blasting will be carried out as part of the work and will require the highway to close for one eight-hour shift between 9am and 4pm in late April. 

The exact date will be communicated three weeks in advance

"Work is expected to be completed by mid July, weather permitting,” the spokeswoman said.
