The Eurobodalla Shire councillor and former mayor was diagnosed with a rapidly growing tumour just after Christmas, after experiencing headaches and loss of function in one leg for about two weeks.
After having an operation on January 21, Cr Thomson was as bright as ever at Tuesday’s ordinary council meeting.
Although Cr Thomson does notice from day to day that he “doesn’t have some of the strengths” that he had before, he feels it is important to keep contributing to the council.
“While I can keep on contributing a worthwhile contribution I will do it,” Cr Thomson said.
“Sometimes I have to stop and think about things, but I’m doing incredibly well.
“The support I have had from my family and the community has been great.”
Next week Cr Thomson will start six weeks of treatment and will not attend council meetings, but hopes to be back in the seat soon after.
“The next six weeks of treatment will be difficult, but you have to do what you have to do,” Cr Thomson said.
He said the long term outlook was not good and he was “taking every day as a winner”.
“I keep getting told 14 months, that is the average timeframe, but I know people who have gone on for years,” he said.
“You just never know.”
