A sculpture of Mr Weyman by Tuross Head sculptor Terry Fuller is to be officially unveiled just outside the Moruya Swimming Centre on January 28.
It has been funded by Moruya businesses through the Moruya Chamber of Commerce and will be cast at Moruya Object Metal.
The idea of the sculpture first came up at a mid-2011 Moruya Chamber meeting and now, after much discussion and consultation with Eurobodalla Shire Council and other parties involved, it is about to become a reality.
Moruya Chamber of Commerce member John Nader has no doubt the Dragons, Blues and Kangaroos player is a worthy subject.
“Moruya is a predominantly rugby league town, and Michael is the single- most important person in it today,” he said.
“He gives it its best publicity.”
Sculptor Terry Fuller says that Weyman’s conduct both on and off the field makes him a great subject.
“You hear so many bad stories about footballers but Michael is a terrific guy who has done a lot for youth,” he said.
The Chamber originally wanted the sculpture placed in Moruya’s Apex Park, but the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s Arts Council deemed this area too cluttered already and and proposed putting it at Ack Weyman Oval.
“The oval is in the middle of a golf course, so that would have been an insult to the artist and everyone else involved,” Mr Nader said.
A compromise was reached which resulted in the current location.
For Mr Fuller, a graduate of the Canberra School of Art, the project has been enjoyable if not easy.
“It’s been a challenge, but it’s great to be a local artist doing a sculpture of a local person that will be cast at a local foundry,” he said.
Council roads and recreation director Warren Sharpe is delighted about the sculpture.
“It’s fantastic what Terry and the Chamber are doing for the community and honouring a great young bloke,” he said.
The Weyman family, along with most of the St George Illawarra first grade team and possibly former coach Wayne Bennett, is expected to be at the unveiling, which at this stage is likely to go ahead at about 11am on January 28.
The family is naturally excited about the unveiling.
“This is fantastic,” Michael’s father Ack said.
“We didn’t expect this, but Michael’s done the hard yards and he is a true blue Moruya boy who talks the town up wherever he goes.”
