Vaughan, competing for the first time in the Veterans’ 6 category (55 to 60 years), won the time trial by over a minute.
It was a superb effort by Vaughan but came as no real surprise since the solo effort against the clock is his pet event.
Vaughan said that a new bike helped him greatly during the 20 -kilometre event.
“I recently upgraded to a carbon fibre time trial bike, with carbon wheels, and a full disc at the back. The improvement over my old bike saved valuable seconds,” he said.
With his confidence sky-high after his success in the time trial, Vaughan went on the attack early in the road race. Only one other rider was able to answer. The pair shared the pace-making to make sure the breakaway stuck.
Attention to detail paid off for Vaughan when he launched a surprise acceleration on a bend, which meant a tail-wind run to the line.
“I made sure he took the lead just before the bend, by starting to look like I was struggling”, Vaughan said.
“He took the bait and I managed to take lengths out of him by surprise, just as we turned to a tailwind. Otherwise I feared he might beat me in the sprint.”
Earlier in the year, the two Gails in the Eurobodalla Club – Pearson and McCann, won four medals in their nationals event in Ballarat.
Gail McCann won silver in the Masters’ 6 category in the criterium, and was narrowly beaten in the sprint in the road race.
Gail Pearson won silver and bronze in the corresponding events in the Masters 3 category.
The club is small in numbers, but continues to punch above its weight with big performances from its cyclists. 2010 will go down as the club’s best ever year at the top level.
Graeme Meek, the club’s national champion on the velodrome, recently fell victim to a stroke. All members wish him a speedy recovery.
