NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Far South Coast manager Andrew Stark said the fire west of Bodalla, near Cadgee Mountain, had burnt 24 hectares before firefighters extinguished it.

There were two fires in the shire still burning as the Bay Post/Moruya Examiner went to print.

“All the other fires in the Eurobodalla are being patrolled and are quite safe at this time,” Mr Stark said.

He said helicopters were flying over a fire in the Deua National Park, which had burnt nine hectares, and one in Badga National Park, which had burnt four hectares.

Mr Stark said all three fires had started by lightning strike.

Eurobodalla RFS crews were assisting with a bushfire in Budawang National Park, north west of Batemans Bay, throughout the weekend.

Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre public liaison officer Tim Carroll said, since Thursday, the fire had grown to 1200 hectares in size.

He said RFS, National Parks and Forest NSW crews conducted backburning along the Western Distributor Road, starting Friday.

“Remote area fire crews have moved in to parts of the fire to extinguish burning logs and trees on the fire’s edge in remote parts,” Mr Carroll said.

He said nine helicopters were operating out of Braidwood, while ground crews from Eurobodalla, Shoalhaven and Lake George were containing the fire from below.

Western Distributor Road between the Kings Highway and Mares Rd remains closed with two more closed over the weekend - Wallaby and Fault Line roads.

Mr Carroll said the fire had moved across Dingo Rd and there had been fire up to the Western Distributor Rd.

“The fire is still well away from private property,” he said. “RFS recommends to all property owners on the South Coast to prepare their properties for bushfire season if they haven’t already.”

RFS held a community meeting in Nelligen on Friday to discuss the fire and provide advice to property owners. About 16 people attended the meeting.
