Tigers had the bad fortune of having a penalty stroke awarded against them, when the ball had hit the foot of Tania Maddison.
Pam Williams from Sticks took the stroke and converted to lead 1-nil.
Tigers never gave up all game and were unlucky not to score on a few occasions.
The defence of the Sticks backs, including veteran Di Challice, set up the forwards attacks for their team to score Sticks second goal.
The final score was 2-nil, which does not reflect the way in which the game was played as Sticks had to really work hard to come away with the win.
Best for Tigers were Tania Maddison, Katie Jobson and Sarah McMahon. For Sticks, Julie Challice, Karly Spindler and Di Challice were the best.
The second match of the afternoon was between Wanderers and Knights.
From the opening whistle, Wanderers went on the attack and were soon awarded a penalty corner, but Knights’ defence held tight and denied Wanderers from scoring.
Knights’ Jill Riches pulled off some courageous tackles to dispose the Wanderers players and put Tom McCullum on the attack only to be stopped by the Wanderers defence.
Some nice lead-up work by Wanderers halves saw winger Theresa Potts put a brilliant pass onto Janeene Michelle, who did some one-two passing with Cheryl Sutherland to see Sutherland score for Wanderers. The score at the break was 1- nil.
After the break, Knights went on the attack early but were denied any chance of getting the ball past the halfway line by some great work from David Brown and Nathan Carruthers.
Wanderers were awarded a corner, and from this Janeene Michelle scored Wanderers’ second goal. The final score was 2-nil.
Best for the Knights were Tom McCullum, Jill Riches and Michelle Zabel. For Wanderers, David Brown, Nathan Carruthers and Theresa Potts stood out.
There will be an umpiring clinic tomorrow, conducted by Tania Maddison, between the first and second games at Gundary Oval.
The clinic will also include coaching on the interpretation of the rules.
The first game will commence at 1.15pm, instead of 1.30pm.
The second game will commence at 3.15pm instead of 3pm. This will allow an hour between games for the clinic.
All players are invited and encouraged to attend.
The next hockey meeting will be on July 4 at the Air Raid Tavern after the last game.
Draw tomorrow
1.15pm Wanderers v Sticks (Tigers-Knights)
3.15pm Tigers v Knights (Wanderers-Sticks)
