THEY came from Sydney to Sale and from Wagga Wagga to Wodonga to play in the 2010 Moruya Seniors Tennis Tournament last Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Moruya Tennis Club.

Over 150 entries were received for the three-day round-robin tournament for players aged over 35 years, including the legendary Heather McKay (winner of 16 British Open Squash titles) and the current Over 65s World Tennis Champion, Phil Higgs.
The Eurobodalla turned on near perfect weather for all three days and play was non-stop from early morning until early evening each day.
In men’s singles, Craig Withell from Sydney played strongly to win his group over a strong field including ACT’s Phil Higgs. Michael Russell from Sydney and ACT’s Karel Dubsky were also classy winners in their groups.
In women’s singles, Heather McKay from Queanbeyan dominated her group.
In other results, Narooma’s Steve Goulding and Bruce Larkham won their men’s doubles group over a strong field. Father and son team Bill and Wayne O’Connell from Batemans Bay won their group, as did Mogo’s Phil Pearson with Doug Parker from Ulladulla.
In women’s doubles, Sydney’s Enid-Besant Ryan teamed with Heather McKay
to win both their doubles events, while Broulee’s Elaine Anderson and Kinuya Wyatt notched up a win for the locals in their group.
The Brian Smith Memorial Shield, for the most senior singles winner, was presented by Norah Smith to Heather McKay.
The John Allard Memorial Shield, for the most senior womens doubles winners, was presented by Libby Ives and Maureen Allard to Jan Aubrey and Pauline Honeyman.
“I would like to express a big thank-you to the Moruya, Broulee and Tuross tennis clubs, and in particular, to Nicole and Ross Bartlett, Nancy Plater and Pat Carmichael who kept players and spectators well fed,” tournament official Brian Carmichael said.
“Also, a big thank you to Libby Ives, Bruce Larkham and Barry Lymbrey for all their help prior to and during the tournament.”
