“It was great to finally get a win on the board,” utility Bronson Horvath said.
“It has been a long time since we have sung the victory song in the sheds, and it was a good feeling.”
The recruitment of new players paid off where it mattered on the weekend.
“We’ve got a few new blokes, young and old, and it was great to see them out there getting amongst it,” Horvath said.
“They will be great for us over the season; it is looking very promising for us.”
Tom and Steve Hilyear, Joey Prow and Brendan Jones were among the recruits who helped the Dolphins to a victory that would have been quite unlikely a month ago.
Character and self-belief also contributed to the Broulee win.
“We had good defence all round,” Horvath said.
“There were many times when they (Narooma) looked like they would go over (for a try) but we wrapped the ball up.”
The Dolphins had four players on the bench, which was fortunate for them as several players suffered injuries. Sean Rose was hit in the ribs and will be out for at least three weeks.
The Dolphins’ front row, Jason Bundy, Ian Halls and Steve Connell, had to play for the entire 80 minutes.
Tristan McDonald scored his first try for the Dolphins since joining the club three years ago, a crucial five-pointer scored halfway through the first half.
The Dolphins’ three best players were judged to be Daniel Leth, Troy Hyland and Tom Hilyear.
“We enjoy playing Narooma because it is always a hard, physical game,” Horvath said.
“It’s war on the field, but they are a good bunch of blokes.”
Narooma players were upset when their flyhalf, Evan Jones, was sin-binned for what they claimed was an innocuous tackle.
“We were getting on top before that,” coach John Griffiths said.
“We were hoping to get
a win, so we were a bit
disappointed.”
However, Griffiths insisted nothing should be taken away from Broulee.
“They have greatly improved since the start of the season, and things are starting to get good in the zone.”
