The day’s activities began with an opening ceremony that saw students march in with the flag of their nominated country as that country’s national anthem was played in the background.
This was followed by a Queen’s Baton relay. The baton was opened and a message from world champion discus thrower Dani Samuels was played to the school. Samuel’s message preached the values of the Commonwealth Games and the importance of sportsmanship.
Students then rotated though games and activities that involved mass participation. At the conclusion of the day, Cyprus were crowned Commonwealth Games champions while England finished second and Sri Lanka finished third.
The day was organised by Sydney based sports company Be Skilled Be Fit and event orgainser David Telfer said there was a great response from the Batemans Bay Public School students and staff.
“All the kids had a ball. I had kids coming up to me and saying it was the best day ever and asking us to come back tomorrow,” he said.
“We got a very good response from both the teachers and students and there was a great vibe around the school.”
“The teachers were great and did a great job helping us run the day and the children were very friendly and enthusiastic.”
Telfer said the themed sports days promoted physical activity in young children.
“The day is about getting children to be as active as possible as often as possible,” he said.
“It’s good to have mass participation because it helps the kids enjoy themselves. We encourage them to be active, have fun and use their sports skills.”
