In the girls’ overall competition, Hayley McNeill and Teagan Dunn from Catalina survived through to the final two rounds of the competition.
Both Dunlop and McNeill have realistic chances of winning their respective age groups if they can maintain their good form in the final round today.
Dunlop sits in second place in the boys 14 years age group with a scratch score of 17-over-par after three rounds. He is only three shots behind age group leader Kurt Eckmann from Castle Hill.
McNeill has a two-stroke lead in the girls’ 14 years age group with a scratch score 26-over-par going into the final day.
The championships teed-off under gloomy skies on Tuesday with Jack Hulyer from the Coolangatta Tweed Heads Golf Club leading the way after a fine two-under-par 70 in the boys’ overall competition.
On Wednesday, an impressive round of 67 from Bonnie Doon golfer Thomas Holz propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. On a day where most players struggled in the blustery conditions, overnight leader Hulyer did well to hold his nerve and stay in touch with Holz.
Yesterday in near perfect conditions, a blistering round of 68 from Blake Byrne of the NSW Golf Club saw him jump to the top of the leaderboard. He holds a solid three-stroke lead over Ryan Smith of Concord Golf Club with 18 holes to play today.
In the girls’ competition there was a log jam at the top with 12 players sitting within two shots of the lead after the first round. Aliza Huff of Belmont, Carly Beck of the Australian Golf Club and Molly Lavercombe of The Lakes Golf Club shared the lead with opening rounds of 77.
On Wednesday, Chantal Hodson of the Australian Golf Club handled the wind the best to take a one-shot lead going into the third round.
Yesterday, Beck regained the lead with a sensational score of 34 on the front nine setting her up for a final round score of 67. Beck now holds a commanding nine stroke lead with Hodson in second place.
Those who did not make the cut after the first two rounds are playing a 36-hole plate tournament at Mollymook Hilltop Golf Club that also concludes today.
