The Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens head coach Tim Walsh announced the team for the last leg of the HSBC Women’s Sevens World Series to be held in Clermont Ferrand, France, on Friday, June 16.
After impressing with her performance during the Canada leg of the series, Cassie Staples was rewarded with her second cap for Australia.
In Canada, Staples scored the opening try in the first game and crossed the line again in the second half to help Australia to a 26-0 win against Spain.
Walsh said the Aussie 7s sit in third position, behind Canada on points difference: Both teams sit on 82 points with New Zealand in the lead on 96 points.
“We came into this season as the hunted and now we are the hunters again. The bitter taste of winning silver and bronze, with some complacency from winning gold has been the difference,” Walsh said.
Staples inclusion is all the more impressive given she first laced up her ruby boots less than a year ago when her trainer put up a YouTube video of her training sessions.
The right people, including Walsh, saw the video and she was quickly selected to play in the development and then Australian teams.
