The sharks were without Luc Hill, Jermaine Connolly and Aaron Brierley due to injuries with Brent Pan, Brendon Ellis and under 18 player James Bundy all stepping into the top grade. The late withdrawal of Tim Weyman who injured a heel in the warm up saw Scott Belcher backing up from the reserves.
The home side belted the sharks from the start as they attempted to intimidate the defending premiers with high shots, and niggle.
It was the Stallions who were to score first after just two minutes when a wide shift saw their centre stroll across the line, the conversion taking the score to 6-0 to the Stallions.
The Sharks were stung into action and worked their way back into the game, with their Alex Stewart, Shane Colebrook and Zach Ingram weathering the initial storm. The teams went try for try as the Sharks crossed for two tries through their winger Shaun Staples, with the two teams locked at 12-12 with 8 minutes remaining in the first stanza.
It was the Stallions who had the last say in the first half when they crossed for their third try through their big Kiwi Centre Karlos Filiga, a field goal at the siren giving them a 19-12 half-time lead.
The physical nature of the first half took its toll on the Sharks, who lost Zach Ingram with a shoulder injury.
The second half saw Cooma hit the ground running with two quick tries, before the Sharks hit back with two of their own through their centres Vinny Marino and Caine Brierley.
Trailing 29-22 with ten minutes remaining, the Sharks looked like they might get on top of the Stallions, with their backs . Unfortunately, their momentum was halted when Marino was sin binned for 10 minutes for running in to help a team mate, while Ellis was binned for 10 for repeated offences.
A late penalty goal and last-minute try secured a 37-22 win for the Stallions.
Jacob Zutt was named man of the match, while Luke Jay, Alex Stewart, Dean Scott and Shaun Staples all played well. Special mention to James Bundy, who was thrown into the fiery clash, and looked like a first grader right off the bat.
Moruya Tries: Shaun Staples 2, Vinney Marino 1, Caine Brierley 1.
Goals: Dennis Green 3 from 4 attempts.
Reserve Grade
In what was a physical encounter, the Sharks and Stallions traded blows in the reserve grade fixture. There was little between the two teams as they battled for ascendancy with the Stallions taking a narrow 18-16 lead into half time.
The Sharks managed to wrestle the advantage in the second half with 3 unanswered and unconverted tries to seemingly be in charge 28-18 with just 8 minutes remaining. The Stallions were not finished, however, with a quick converted try getting them to within 4, with a very nervous 5 minutes remaining. The Sharks managing to hold out for a well deserved 28-24 victory.
A hat-trick of tries to Jack Owers has seen the young winger/fullback become a real force in the competition, while 5/8 Gavin Olive once again led the players around the park well, capping off a fine game with a brilliant solo try.
New recruit Toby Affleck also impressed with some fine touches and strong defence.
Moruya: Tries: Jack Owers 3, Andrew Stewart 1, Toby Affleck 1, Gavin Olive 1.
League Tag
The Sharkettes continued their early season form with a strong win over the Cooma Fillies 22-12. The game was tight early, but the longer it went, the more Moruya were able to assert field position and convert this into points.
The girls will face premiership favourites the Bombala High Heelers next week and should be a great test to see where they are at.
Moruya Tries: Hannah Cadogan 2, Nicole Cowdroy 1, Hayley Johnstone 1.
Goals: Elka Pike 3 / 4
Under 18s
Moruya went into the game with just the thirteen players against their physically bigger opponents with a large bench. In the unexpected heat of a Cooma autumn day, the Sharks were always in the game, going into the half time break with a narrow 12-10 lead. The young sharks were able to stick with the stallions right up until the last 15, when the heat and lack of reserves took its toll.
Cooma able to post late points against a tiring defensive line to take the win 38-22.
Moruya Tries: Fin McNaughton 1, Jack Hyndes 2, James Bundy 1
