FIGHTING MEN. – Speaking in the House of Lords last week, Lord Curzon said the house was like a home of mourning. Six peers have been killed during the war along with 120 peers’ sons, including 62 heirs. The war was thinking of threatening the extinction of 8 peerages. And yet we hear some people say that it is only the poorer classes who do all the fighting.

NEW CAR. – Mr. C. D. Fraser, formerly of Nerrigundah but now of Cobargo, has just purchased a new 1917 model six-cylinder Buick car, which he will run in place of the Clement Bayard car.

BATEMAN’S BAY. – Milton’s local Dramatic Company advertises a dramatic entertainment consisting of a three-act comedy entitled “A Cheerful Liar,” to be given at Bateman’s Bay on Tuesday, the 27th instant, in aid of the local patriotic funds. This Company is highly spoken of and credited with having the ability of making men, women and children laugh and grow fat.

SCHOLASTIC. – The head teacher, Mr. E. J. Egan, informs us that the following pupils from the local Public School were successful in passing for Qualifying Certificates:- Angelena M. O. Bartlett, Miriam Chesher, Edith Cowdroy, Dulcie Margaret Louttit, Rita Elsie Luck, Thomas J. Cooper, Allan Coppin, Norman H. Parbery, Arthur Lloyd Griffiths, Ralph Slater Hawdon, John Werge Hawdon and Allan William Louttit. Thomas J. Cooper was also successful in obtaining a bursary.

PRESENTATION. – The good people of Eurobodalla and Nerrigundah are always to be found in the van when any public or private movement of a genuine nature is on the tapis. They are now uniting as one family with a view of suitably manifesting their appreciation of the long and pious administrations of Moruya’s venerable and beloved Parish Priest, the Very Reverend Father Cassidy. With this in mind a public Social will be held in the Eurobodalla Hall on Friday, the 2nd of March, at which an address and presentation will be given this truly popular Christian Teacher. All are invited to this important function, to which the doors will open at 8 p.m.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE. – On Sunday next Harvest Thanksgiving Service will be held in the Methodist Church Moruya. The church will be decorated with fruit, produce and flowers and the singing and services will be appropriate to the occasion.

XMAS GIFTS. – Mrs Keyte, of Turlinjah, asks us to convey her very sincere thanks on behalf of her sons at the front, to the residents of Turlinjah and Bergalia, especially to Miss M. Brown and Mr. C. Callaghan for the Xmas parcels they received in France. Pte Keyte says the articles were acceptable, some of them being badly needed.

BODALLA NEWS. – On Saturday night last a very successful dance was held in the local hall in aid of the Red Cross Funds. The music was supplied gratis by local talent and everybody present spent a very pleasant time. Mr. Birnie, Bridge Inspector, is back at Tuross River Bridge after an absence of several weeks at Moruya.

STAR PICTURES. – Mr. Godfrey Hanscom, proprietor of the Moruya Electric Star Picture equipments, writes from Sydney to say that he has secured some of the very latest and most popular films now been screened in the State, and will reopen with them on the 10th March. Godfrey also states that he has visited most of the picture shows in the Metropolis, but so far has seen no light as perfect as that emitted by his Moruya Machine.

NAROOMA. – From a Correspondent.

A very quiet wedding took place on last Saturday, at 8 o’clock, when Miss A. Koerber, eldest daughter of Mr. G. Koerber, was married to Mr. J. French, of the Northern Rivers. After the wedding breakfast the happy couple journeyed to Bermagui where they intended sailing by the Merimbula for the Northern Rivers.

Mr. F. Brice just launched a beautiful rowing boat for the Bodalla Co.

Miss Mary Lynch, of the Coronation Hotel has not been in the best of health and has gone to the Mudgee District, where she intends spending a few months holiday.

Eighteen 100 years ago booklets containing articles for the years 1899 to 1916  are available ($5 ea) from the Society’s rooms.  Copies of local newspapers from the 1860s to date can be viewed at the Society’s Family History Research Centre (Ph 4474 3224) situated at the rear of the Museum in Campbell St. Moruya (www.mdhs.org.au).
