VIDEO: Surf Beach blaze.
Rural Fire Service district manager, John Cullen, said the Surf Beach fire, which broke on Thursday afternoon, had been contained.
The RFS will monitor the fire to ensure that the fire doesn’t cross George Bass Drive under the strong westerly winds predicted for Friday, August 18.
The fire started late on August 17 on Eurobodalla Shire Council land, Mr Cullen said.
“Normally that country is damp and doesn’t burn, but the strong winds lately have dried everything out,” he said.
“We caution people to take care if they have any plans to burn off, and make sure they have the appropriate knowledge, resources and ability to burn off safely.
“If they need help they can call our control center in Campbell Street, Moruya.
“It’s also a good idea to check recent burns for re-ignition under the heavy winds we’ve been having – all it takes is one stump still smouldering underground,” he said.
The RFS worked late into the night to contain the blaze.
“You can only admire the volunteers who have the skill, the time and the passion – they all did a marvellous job under very heavy conditions,” Mr Cullen said.
