These services are part of Eurobodalla Council's Flying-fox Management Plan, which continues to guide Council on managing the species and was developed with community input after an influx of more than 300,000 flying-foxes into Batemans Bay in 2016.

Currently there are about 18,900 flying foxes shire-wide, with most in Batemans Bay.

Eurobodalla Council's natural resource officer Natalie Foster said managing the impact of flying-foxes remains a challenge for Council's up and down the coast as the species sources food from native forests in the area. In recent years, the endangered species have chosen to make urban camps more than ever.

"That's a complex issue as well relating to loss of habitat," Ms Foster said.

"They are a keystone species, the main reason being they fly a lot further than any other pollinators. They increase diversity in forests and their main food source is the forest trees."

The removal of Cocos palms in the local area is an important part of the solution. Flying foxes have learnt to harvest fruit from this introduced species to their own detriment, Ms Foster explained, which causes a range of health problems for flying-foxes including tooth problems, constipation, dehydration and death.

Flying foxes can also get trapped in the fronds and their wings can become damaged by the tough flower spikes. Eating fruit from Cocos palms also makes their droppings sticker and harder to clean.

"The digestive system of a bat only takes 30 minutes. So if they are foraging in your yard, it is likely you'll end up with bat droppings as well," Ms Foster said.

Council has removed 131 Cocos palms in the Batemans Bay region and plans to remove around 150 more and replace them with suitable native trees. A letter box drop targeting residents near camps offering to remove Cocos palms has started this week.

Odour neutralisation pots and water pressure cleaners for loan are available from the Batemans Bay Depot during opening hours.
