Emergency services were called to the scene just after 4pm on Sunday, April 24, following reports a man had been located on a creek bank unresponsive.

Police have been told the man went swimming in the creek shortly prior and when he could not be located, witnesses contacted emergency services and began a search for him.

The man - aged 46 - was located and assisted by witnesses a short time later, before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and attempted to revive the man, however he died at the scene.

Officers from South Coast Police District attended and, with the assistance of SES and VRA, recovered the man's body.

Inquiries into the incident continue. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Director of Surf Life Saving Far South Coast, Cheryl McCarthy said it was a tragic event.

Ms McCarthy said they received a callout to assist a man at Bithry Inlet, however due to the lack of reception, beachgoers had struggled to get a hold of emergency services and by the time Surf Life Saving arrived to assist, the man could not be revived.

Meanwhile, Ms McCarthy said Anzac Day, April 25, marked the last day of patrols for Surf Life Saving for the season.

"Flags right along the Far South Coast will come down today and we'll be back with flags in October, but we'll have emergency callout response seven days a week all year round," she said.
