The marginal seat of Gilmore, which is going to be vital in the current federal election, has a massive homlessness issue and a lack of housing, with Mr Albanese saying the Labor Party would establish a Housing Australia Future Fund to tackle the issue.
He made the announcement during a visit to Gilmore on Thursday at the Manildra Group's Shoalhaven Starches at Bomaderry with Gilmore MP Fiona Phillips and Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations Tony Burke.
Homelessness along the South Coast and the lack of housing has been an issue ACM has been highlighting through its Home Truths campaign.
"We will establish a Housing Australia Future Fund, which will provide an additional 20,000 social housing units," he said in response to a question on local homelessness and lack of housing.
"We know homelessness is a huge issue, particularly in the regions.
"We will also build affordable housing units for essential workers.
"We know domestic violence is an issue around the country and of the 20,000 units, we'll make sure that 4000 of those units and dwellings are available for women and children escaping domestic violence.
"We will have additional funding for emergency housing and a specific fund as well for indigenous housing, for fixing up indigenous housing in areas."
But he did not give a definitive answer when questioned on a timeline.
"We know homelessness is a huge issue and we know the biggest group where homelessness is growing is older women," he said.
"Older women who just can't find anywhere to rent.
"The Prime Minister told them they should just go and buy a house. That's their solution."
