Competing against crews from other states and northern NSW, the Southern NSW Region team swept to glory in the 1km pursuit event, where the men's team starts behind the women's team with the aim of both crossing the line together in the best time possible.
Southern NSW Region team manager and Nature Coast member, John Holgate said it was pretty sensational.
"We knew we'd done well but didn't know how well," he said.
"We raced it strategically and won it through good teamwork," John said.
"The men caught the women on the last turn and then both the men's and women's crews encouraged each other. We got a fantastic reception from the spectactors and when we came back to shore we were very happy; we'd raced it as perfectly as we could," John said.
Interestingly the men's and women's teams working together, beat men's and women's crews who had individually beaten them.
Assistant team coach and team captain Gill McCallum from Merimbula Water Dragons said it was a really good race.
"I could see we were moving really quickly and as the men came up, we (the women's boat) just lifted. All the NSW team members were cheering on the shore, it was fantastic," Gill said.
But the team didn't know how they had done until the medal presentation ceremony when the individual times were revealed.
John said there was an amazing reaction at dinner when the crew found out how well they had done.
But Nature Coast also had other achievements at the national event which the club was particularly pleased about.
"The Nature Coast Senior B women's crew got a bronze in the 200m race and against such strong competition, it was a pretty good effort, particularly as only three were Senior Bs and the remaining seven were Senior Cs" John said.
Nature Coast women managed a fourth place in the 2km race and in the 500m race finished fourth but only by 0.7s.
The Southern NSW Region team also picked up bronze medals racing 500m in the smaller 10s boats in the Women's category and 500m in the Mixed category in 20s boats.
The seven Nature Coast members in the regional team were part of a crew which included paddlers from Merimbula Water Dragons, Sussex Inlet, Mako and Sudu.
Australian Dragon Boat Championships is Australia's premier Dragon Boating event in which clubs from all states/regions compete against one another for the title of National Champion.
The AusChamps is an annual event, and is held in a different state/territory each year. The championships attract approximately 2500-3000 competitors.
