The man later died from his injuries at Shoalhaven Hospital.
A large area of the Nowra CBD is cordoned off as police and detectives examine the scene.
Nowra Lane is closed to traffic between Worrigee and Plunkett Streets.
Police said just before 4.20am Tuesday, January 4, emergency services were called to Nowra Lane, near Worrigee Street, Nowra, following reports a man had been located unconscious with injuries to his abdomen.
Officers attached to South Coast Police District attended and commenced CPR, prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Despite their efforts, the man died at Shoalhaven Hospital a short time later. He is yet to be formally identified.
A crime scene has been established at Nowra Lane, which will be examined by specialist forensic officers.
Investigations into the incident are underway, and police are urging anyone with information, or who may have dashcam vision from the area, to come forward.
