While most walking tracks in this area are unmarked, we've asked some of the shire's most experienced bushwalkers to give us the inside scoop on their favourite walks and how to get to them.

This week, Batemans Bay Bushwalking Club member Gay Samal shares favourite her favourite track to take visitors: Bengello Beach.

If you're a newbie to bushwalking, have people visiting the shire or simply want an easy weekend walk option, Gay Samal says to look no further than Bengello Beach.

The track showcases the forests of Moruya as well as the beach and walkers can often spot skydivers, surfers and a variety of wildlife.

"I think the best thing about this walk is it's an easy track so you can take the time to enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest and the beach," Ms Samal says.

But if you're looking for a longer walk, you can easily add on kilometers by heading south to the Moruya breakwall from the windsock or north to Broulee.

"Heading north adds a bit of extra time but if you pack some food, you could have a swim on your way back at the patrolled beaches in Broulee and really make a day of it," Ms Samal says.

"A lot of people ride this track as well and people take their families. This is also a great walk for pets because it's not in a national park."

Ms Samal says you don't need fancy gear, but just a regular pair of runners and you're good to go.

"It's interesting because sometimes I'll see loads of people on this walk and other times I'll have it all to myself," she says.

"I've seen glossy black cockatoos on the walk, which is always a treat. Usually you hear them before you see them!"

Born in Queensland, Ms Samal worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra and overseas for many years before retiring in Broulee.

She has always been a lover of the outdoors and joined the Batemans Bay Bushwalkers to meet new people.

"I didn't realize the shire had so much to offer and I really enjoy discovering and exploring new areas by bushwalking," she says.

The bushwalkers club had their first meeting this week after lockdown put a stop to their regular walks.

"It's a bit of a weird feeling, venturing out at the moment, but it is lovely to be able to catch up with everybody," Ms Samal says.

The Batemans Bay Bushwalkers club is running two walks a week at the moment, to make up for lost time during lockdown.

7km, easy

Just north of Moruya Airport, off George Bass Drive turn left at the sign "Bengello Beach (South)". Follow the gravel road around the airport fence, parking near the windsock.

Head north from the carpark following the track along the back of the dunes. It's a good flat track and watch for the information boards along the way. There are little tracks to the beach or just continue along the forest track for about 3.5kms until you come to a gate and carpark on the right.

This area is known locally as Sand Mines as several decades ago sand was taken for construction purposes. Walk through the carpark to the beach and head south back to the windsock. Best to do the beach walk at low tide or return back via the forest track.

There is always something to see on the track, in the trees, in the sky or in the sea. Just take your time to enjoy the diversity of this easy forest track.
